MOTS-c is a 16-residue peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA region. Its sequence is Met-Arg-Trp-Gln-Glu-Met-Gly-Tyr-Ile-Phe-Tyr-Pro-Arg-Lys-Leu-Arg. MOTS-c is studied in mitochondrial-to-nuclear communication, cellular energy sensing, and metabolic-stress signaling.
